Donnie Koonce
President
Born the fifth of seven children to the late Isaac (‘62) and Bertha Koonce, Donnie was raised by a single mother since the age of three along with his siblings. Although her efforts provided much, Donnie’s early life was not on a “crystal stair.” Having witnessed his mother’s determination to provide for her family (she continues to work and garden at the age of 80), her life-long work in the community and caring ways, Donnie learned many of life’s lessons at an early age. He took life’s challenges head on and with the support of a loving family set out to accomplish his goals. As a result of his love of basketball and athleticism; Donnie, a Morehead nominee, had the good fortune of attending UNC Charlotte on a basketball scholarship. At UNC Charlotte not only did he earn a B. A. in Economics, but he won several academic awards as well as having a distinguished basketball career. He was elected co-captain his senior year and had the privilege of being drafted by the Detroit Pistons of the NBA in 1981.
Upon his release by
the Pistons, Donnie’s pursuit of his dream of playing
professional basketball took him to
places such as Atlantic City, NJ (CBA), Manila, Philippines (PBA), and Evansville, IN (CBA).
After the conclusion of his professional basketball career and with a thirst to learn more, Donnie attended the University of Alabama- Birmingham where he earned his MBA while his wife, Masherrill, earned her Doctorate in Optometry. In 1993, Donnie and his wife returned to Charlotte where he continued serving in the community, a trait he learned from his mother. The Bank of America Vice President, has served on many Boards including the Hornet’s Nest Girl Scouts Council, the Alumni Board of Governors of U N C Charlotte (former President), the 100 Black Men of Greater Charlotte (President) and as an adjunct Professor at Johnson C. Smith University. Additionally, he has spent countless hours volunteering as coach in recreational basketball, soccer and baseball leagues in the Charlotte community and with an area Boy Scout Troop where his son Rhett has achieved the rank of Life Scout. Donnie and his wife Masherrill are the parents of two gifted children, Amber age 20 (sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill) and Rhett 15 (sophomore at South Mecklenburg High School.)
